Parliament House is situated on Captial Hill, one of the hills around which Walter Burley Griffin designed Canberra in 1912. Designed by Mitchell/Giurgola Architects and opened in 1988, the building is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere at 300m wide by 300m long. A distinctive feature of the building is its integration into Capital Hill with the 2000 car parking area and some of its 4700 rooms subterranean. Sitting atop is the iconic 81m stainless steel flagpole, visible from many points around Canberra. Parliament House is open to the public every day for tours.
